The Trail

The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) is a well-known trail that runs from Springer Mountian, GA to Mount Katahdin, ME.  It passes through 14 states, over 250 campsites, and is approximately 2,200 miles in length. Millions of people visit the trail each year, but only a couple thousand attempt what is called a "thru-hike"; meaning, a hiker walks from one end to the other in one attempt. It's estimated that no more than 25 percent of thru-hike attempts are successful.

Typically, hikers start in mid-March or April, and finish in 4-6 months depending on their pace. Most hikers choose to travel northbound (South to North) and they are known as the "NOBO's". Far fewer travel southbound (North to South) and they are known as the SOBO's.

We plan to join the NOBO clan and head North, March 31, 2014.
